Born in Amsterdam to a Dutch mother and Chilean father, Ester Grass Vergara draws on both cultural backgrounds to shape her photographic language. The warmth and saturated tones of South America infuse her images with vibrancy, while a Dutch sensibility—direct, natural, and unembellished—grounds her pared-back approach.
Much of her work circles around familiar, rounded forms—shells, eggs, fruit—that echo the curves of the female body. These recurring motifs create a quiet dialogue between light and matter, between women and the worlds they inhabit. Her still lifes are vivid and deliberate, often staging reality in ways that feel both composed and dreamlike.
In contrast, her portraits of women are stripped down to essentials. Backgrounds are sparse: a wall, a stretch of sky, a tiled surface—fragments that gesture toward a place without distracting from the subject herself.
Across still life and portraiture alike, Ester works with intimacy. She often positions herself close enough to catch the texture of skin or the imagined scent of fruit. Through colour, contrast, and detail, she explores a feminine sensibility that is at once soft and self-assured.
At the heart of her work is a quiet confidence—a desire to see and be seen clearly, without artifice. Through her lens, everyday forms become sensuous, symbolic, and deeply human.
